Is Your Dog Bonded With You

Is Your Dog Bonded With You – Or Just With Your Food Pouch?

In the world of dog training, we hear the word “bond” thrown around a lot.

Trainers often talk about using food to build a better relationship, to boost motivation, or to create engagement. And yes — food can be a brilliant tool. But here’s something not many are willing to say out loud…

🧠 If your dog only wants to work when the food is visible — the bond might be with the food, not with you.

Let that sink in.

Because here’s the thing: if you put the food away, and your dog instantly loses interest, turns off, or disengages… then what you’ve got isn’t a relationship — it’s a transaction.

Now, I’m not anti-rewards. In fact, quite the opposite! Rewards are essential in any kind of training. They’re how we communicate, how we reinforce behaviours, and how we show our dogs that working with us is worthwhile.

But here’s the shift:
The rewards don’t always need to be
on show.
And they shouldn’t be the
only reason your dog wants to work with you.

So What Is Real Relationship?

For me, a true relationship with your dog means:

  • They choose to engage with you, even if you don’t have visible food or toys.

  • They’re motivated by the interaction itself — not just the immediate reward.

  • They trust that something good will come, even if they can’t see it right now.

That trust takes time to build. It takes consistency. It takes being the person your dog wants to be with — not just the person with the best snacks.

When you have that level of connection, you unlock something really special:

  • A dog that listens even when it’s hard.

  • A dog that works with you through challenges.

  • A dog that genuinely enjoys the teamwork — and that joy is mutual.

So, Should We Stop Using Food?

Absolutely not.
But we
should shift the focus.

Rewards still come. But they’re not the star of the show. The relationship is.

Start by using food to reinforce you — not just behaviours. Use it in play, in celebration, in joy. Use it to build trust, not dependency. And then start experimenting: can your dog work knowing food is nearby, but not seeing it? Can they respond to cues when you’re empty-handed?

That’s the mark of a dog who’s bonded with you — not your bait bag.

If this idea has struck a chord with you and you’d love to build a stronger working relationship with your dog — not just a “feed me” connection — I’d love to help. Whether you’re just starting out or already training for sport, there’s always room to deepen the relationship.
